The
Following list is compiled from two sources:
"High Sheriffs of County Louth" by Philip Crosslé in Tempest's Annual,
1918, page 26
&
Sheriffs and Justices of County Louth, 1664-1769, [no author given], in
Tempest's Annual, 1920, page 36
Philip Crosslé gives no indication as to his source material.
For its primary
source, the second article above is taken from: "a volume entitled 'Co. Louth
Crown Book of Assizes, 1761-1769' reference 6O-4-70 in the Clerk of the Crown
Records in the Public Record Office, Dublin".
It is fortunate that these lists
were made, as the original source material for the second source mentioned above was destroyed in the
Public Record Office fire in 1922.
There are large gaps in Crosslé's list up to the year 1712 and I have used the
second list above to fill these in. Also there are minor surname spelling
differences (and one major one, in 1698, Keating/Bealing). For the most part,
both lists agree as to the dates, but there are sometimes differences of a year,
one case in point being the Keating/Bealing name above.
Records taken from the second listing above are marked with an asterisk (*) in
the "Comment" Field.
