The following list may be of assistance in tracing military ancestors who were based in County Louth. The "Year" indicates that the regiment was stationed in Co. Louth at some period during that year or perhaps the year before or afterwards depending on the length of the stay by the regiment at that station. In the case of the Irish Militia Regiments (pre-1855), the Regiment Number given is that number given in the order of precedence of the 38 Militia units, as settled at ballot 8 August 1793.
The list used by Gavin & O'Sullivan in Dundalk, A Military History [DMH] was compiled from lists in Tempest's Annual of 1898 and 1906.
I have been able to give a reference for most entries. A small number elude me. This, I hope, will be remedied at some stage, when I find my original notes. There is probably some duplication of regiments in particular years. Different publications often refer to regiments under different names. I thought it best to leave them in. Date format in references is dd/mm/yyyy.
