In 1854 the Irish Militia, which, since 1816, had ceased to be a force, was
organised. The Louth Militia was clothed in Red with Green Facings. Colonel
Lord Bellew appointed Sir John Stephen Robinson, Bart., Lieutenant Colonel.
The latter had served in the 60th Rifles. Through negotiation,
the Louth Militia was made a Rifle Regiment (it had been proposed by
Government to make it an Artillery Regiment) and was called The County Louth
Rifles. Captain WJ Bellingham was appointed Adjutant in January 1855 and
recruiting began at Drogheda on the 20th of that month.
The Militia regiments were re-constituted as a response to the demands being
made on the Regular Army, where manpower was required to take part in the
Crimean War. It was intended that the Militia should take over the home
duties of the Regular Army, thereby freeing up the professional soldiers to
fight in the War.
