COUNTY LOUTH MOTOR AMBULANCE FUND

 

    It has been suggested that a Motor Ambulance for the front should be provided by County Louth and that funds for this splendid object would be collected without delay, as these ambulances are most urgently needed to convey our wounded soldiers from the battlefield to the hospitals.

    A Motor Ambulance fully equipped and ready for the front costs £400. Any subscriptions received over this amount would go towards running expenses (£8-£10 a week), and would thus ensure the motor ambulance being sent out more speedily.

    The undersigned, therefore, hope that County Louth will respond generously and quickly to this appeal. The smallest subscription will be gratefully received. All subscriptions will be acknowledged in the local Press and Irish Times.

CO. LOUTH AND DUNDALK MOTOR AMBULANCE FUND.

 

    The Committee of the County Louth Motor Ambulance Fund (having joined with a Committee of the town of Dundalk, who had started a similar fund) beg to return grateful thanks to all subscribers who, by their generous help, have enabled the Committee to close their subscription list with the total of £624 17s 6d. A "Sunbeam" Motor Ambulance has been ordered, and will leave shortly for the front.

Dundalk Democrat 10 March 1917:

 

Captain J. H. Ward RAMC writing to a friend in Co Louth the other day had the following interesting note: "Two days ago I saw the good old Dundalk Motor Ambulance in the 1^st Cavalry workshops undergoing repair. It is to be repainted. When this is done I will try and get it photographed and will send you a copy. This is properly styled the ‘Dundalk and Co. Louth Motor Ambulance’. It was provided by the very generous ‘town and county’ subscription over two years ago, and has been at work ever since. Probably some of those who put up the money for it hardly expected to hear of it surviving two years of such rough usage as a motor ambulance has to endure in France. As a matter of fact it has had its narrow squeaks. The hood was blown off while it was doing its splendid work of bringing the wounded back from the firing line at Ypres in April, 1915; but no one was hurt, so it may be regarded as one of the lucky caravans." It must have been quite a friendly meeting , that of Captain Ward with the battered and worn, but still useful ambulance that has carried the colours of Co Louth during the two years of such experiences on the Western battle field.
