The Index to Co. Louth Death Notices on the following pages is taken from two sources:

A list of Dundalk obituaries published annually in Tempest's Annual (commencing in the 1931 edition for the year 1930), a local directory, using local papers as its source.

And:

The Death Notices published in the Drogheda Independent, a weekly newspaper.

Names found in Tempest's Annual are given the reference TA.

Names found in the Drogheda Independent are given the reference DI.

I have given the name, address and date of death. If you are searching for a death notice, it is best to look in the newspaper for the Saturday following the death, or the week following that. With reference to those names with TA beside them, the main newspapers in Dundalk at the time were the Dundalk Democrat (available on film) and the Dundalk Examiner.

This list contains over 4,100 names. While most of the names relate to people living in Co. Louth, it is worth pointing out that the papers were also notified of deaths in surrounding counties as well as in other countries and these are included in the list. It is also worth taking note that many of the names do not appear on monumental inscriptions.

I have included only Death Notices (from the Birth, Marriages, Deaths column), not Obituaries. If following up on a name in the list, it is also worth looking out for an obituary notice.

NOTE: I have been as accurate as possible in transcribing these names and dates. However, particularly in the case of the Drogheda Independent, it was not always easy to read from the film (I used the films in the National Library of Ireland) and I have simply done as best I can. When I was unable to find notices in any particular week, I scanned the entire newspaper for that week three times before continuing on. However, it is quite possible that I missed some notices. This list is meant as a genealogical guide and should not be taken as definitive. If you cannot find a name in this list, it might still be worth your while to search the newspapers yourself.

Please do not ask me to look up a notice for you as a refusal might offend.
