Index to County Louth Title Deeds (1665-1882)
This is a Name Index to over
1,200 Title Deeds that have been abstracted or transcribed and printed
in the County Louth Archaeological & Historical Journal in various articles over the past ninety years.
Among the deeds there are also a small number of Wills and Marriage
Settlements and these have also been included. Most of the earlier
transcriptions to appear in the Journal were taken from the
books in the Land Registry in Henrietta Street, Dublin, starting with
Book I. There was perhaps an ambition that all the Louth Title Deeds
would eventually be extracted and printed. Some cold water was poured
on this idea by the Registrar of Deeds, as quoted by the Editor in
the 1941 edition of the Journal, who advised that there were 583,046
deeds in total (for all Ireland) and 889 books running from 1708 to
1832. Fr. Murray, before his death, had extracted deeds up to Book
XVIII at which point the project was abandoned. Most of the deeds
printed in later editions of the Journal were abstracts of counterpart
deeds discarded from the Roden Estate Office when it was moved from
Dundalk. The deeds were thankfully salvaged by Mr. Redmond Magrath
(1853-1933) and
many of these can now be found in the Louth County Archives. Fr.
McIvor returned to the Registry of Deeds to transcribe the appropriate
documents in his “Historical Notes” series, in-depth Townland
surveys of remarkable scope.
There are probably other
articles in other journals of which I am not aware. In this context it
is worth mentioning, of course, the Dowdall Deeds, edited by
Charles MacNeill & A.J. Otway-Ruthven, published by the Irish
Manuscripts Commission in 1960.
